There’s a special kind of care that goes into maintaining a clean, comfortable, and truly homelike environment for those living with memory loss. At Nanaimo Memory Care, we’re looking for a thoughtful and detail-oriented Laundry Aide to join our team. This role is about more than just washing and folding it’s about ensuring our residents feel safe, dignified, and well-cared-for in their home. Every sheet, every garment you handle contributes to the warmth and comfort of our community. If you’re someone who takes pride in quiet, meaningful work and wants to make a real difference in people’s lives, this could be the perfect fit.
About Us
Nanaimo Memory Care is a brand-new, 83-bed residential community located on the beautiful northwestern tip of Long Lake. We’re the first standalone memory care residence on Vancouver Island, designed specifically for seniors living with dementia. Our philosophy is simple: resident-centered care in a secure, home-like environment. We’ve designed our space with a neighbourhood concept to encourage interaction and independence, while our award-winning Avenir Alzheimer’s program ensures each resident’s unique needs are met with compassion and expertise. With 24-hour licensed staff trained in Alzheimer’s care, elegantly furnished suites, and a focus on meaningful engagement, we’re setting a new standard for memory care. Every role here, including laundry, is essential to creating that feeling of home.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Performing a variety of general laundry tasks to maintain a clean, fresh, and comfortable environment for our residents.
- Making regular rounds through each wing and neighbourhood to collect soiled linens and personal clothing throughout your shift.
- Preparing articles for washing by unbuttoning, running out pockets, and unrolling sleeves paying attention to the little details.
- Carefully sorting soiled laundry into appropriate loads, ensuring resident garments are handled separately and with care.
- Following all standard washing procedures, reading garment tags and care directions to launder items correctly and preserve their quality.
- Adding the right soap solutions and chemicals according to established guidelines for each load.
- Handling contaminated linens separately from all other laundry, following strict infection control protocols.
- Drying resident clothing and linens in dryers, checking that items come out fresh and ready to use.
- Bagging any dry-clean-only garments in plastic bags and notifying your supervisor, who will contact the responsible party for pick-up.
- Distributing clean, folded laundry to the appropriate residents, making sure everyone gets their own belongings back.
- Checking that garments are properly marked inside. If you find any items needing repair, you’ll report this to your supervisor so they can contact the family.
- Wearing gloves and aprons to protect yourself when handling soiled linens, and always washing your hands between handling soiled and clean items.
- Never wearing soiled gloves while working in the neighbourhoods to maintain a clean and safe environment.
- Taking responsibility for your equipment—cleaning washers and dryers after each shift, and clearing dryer lint filters after every single use.
- Reporting any mechanical issues promptly to the Maintenance Director, Executive Director, or designee so repairs can happen quickly.
- Using protective eyewear when handling laundry liquids or chemicals.
- Stepping in to perform any other miscellaneous work assignments as needed to support the team.
What We’re Looking For
- You have a High School Diploma or equivalent, or at least the ability to read and understand written directions clearly.
- Previous laundry or housekeeping experience is preferred but not required—we’re happy to train the right person with a good attitude.
- You’re comfortable with the physical demands of the role, including frequently lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects weighing up to 50 lbs, and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
- You’re able to stand and walk for most of an 8-hour shift (approximately 6 hours combined), with some sitting, reaching, bending, twisting, and climbing as needed.
- Your visual acuity is intact, including color vision, depth perception, and field of vision—important for sorting items and reading care labels.
- You’re comfortable working in a variety of environmental conditions, including indoor and outdoor settings, with occasional exposure to heat, humidity, dampness, noise, vibrations, and potential hazards like fumes, odors, dust, or chemicals.
- You’re reliable, discreet, and understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality for our residents and their families.
- Most importantly, you have a genuine care for others and want to contribute to a warm, respectful, and supportive community.
